Energy efficiency
According to Eskom there are nine million electricity consuming homes in South
Africa. Supply shortage is a reality and saving is everyone’s business.
In order to pay less, we have to use less in our homes. Here’s a handy A to Z
guide on ways to save electricity in your home:
|

|
-
Appliances need to be monitored for energy efficiency. Check the door seals on
your fridge and stove. Also check the thermostat on your fridge. It doesn’t
have to be the North Pole in there! Service major appliances regularly.
-
Ban the tumble drier and dry your washing on the clothes line.
-
Compact Florescent Lamps (CFLs) use only about 20 percent of the electricity
used by standard incandescent bulbs and they last six times longer. Even if you
use CFLs, remember to turn lights off when you leave a room.
-
Dripping hot water taps waste water and money. Fix leaking taps by replacing
washers as soon as you identify them. A steady drip can waste a lot of water in
a month – as much as 15 showers or 100 toilet flushes.
-
Energy can be saved along with water for a double saving – use plugs in basins
and don’t let the water run unnecessarily.

stomach, especially after over-indulging.

gassy, bloated symptoms.
-
Constipation – try a cup or two of black forest tea which contains senna and

Six Good Habits
Washing hands
Washing hands is your best defence against germs. Many illnesses including the
common cold, gastro and childhood illness are spread by hand-to-hand contact.
Regular hand washing can prevent these and many other infections. Wet soap is
tricky to handle, so rather use a squirt of liquid soap. Keep a ‘no-water’
handwash in your bag for emergencies.

Tips...
-
Teach your toddler to wet her hands with warm water and lather up. First she
should wash her palms, then the back of her hands and then between her fingers
and around her nails. It should take as long as you can sing ‘Happy Birthday’.
-
Remind her to dry her hands properly afterwards. Damps hands spread more germs!
-
Encourage hand washing after toilet or potty use, playing outside or with pets,
before meals or snacks and after blowing your nose.
-
If you’re still changing nappies, make a big deal of washing your hands and
your toddler’s hand after changing. You’ll be getting the message across four
plus times per day!

|
Make it stick...Make a chart for the bathroom. Give your child a star or
sticker every time washes her hands correctly.
Be creative...“There’s nothing like a colourful, interesting pump-action
bottle of liquid handwash on the basin to attract a curious little toddler!”
Janine Trask, mom to Daniel and Rachael.
